Welcome to For the Love, a newsletter dedicated to amateur soccer and soccer culture in Philadelphia and beyond. Our first issue comes at an interesting time in local amateur soccer. Summer of Soccer Continues
Spain and Argentina won the two biggest prizes on the planet on Sunday with wins in the European Championship in Berlin and Copa America final in Miami but for three local soccer teams there is still hardware available.
Ocean City Nor’easters will be hosting Round of 32 and Round of 16 playoff matches for USL League Two with a doubleheader Friday and a game on Sunday. Ocean City will play the second game at 7:30 p.m. while their opponent and the two teams in the first match will be determined by qualifiers. Reading United visits Vermont Green on Tuesday night for a chance to qualify for the playoffs after finishing second in the Mid-Atlantic Conference.
West Chester United had two games on Saturday night and while they won both, Reading United finished second in USL League Two with a win over Lehigh Valley United. West Chester’s NPSL team, however, advanced in the NPSL playoffs, winning the Keystone West Conference championship game with a 4-0 win over Electric City FC at YSC Sports.
West Chester is looking to get back to the national semifinal and with their USL 2 team knocked out they’ll have a chance to bolster their lineup for the run. They host New York Shockers for the East Region semifinal on Wednesday at Widener University.
